Karjat is a preferred spot for weekend holidays, picnics, river rafting, trekking, and hiking. It is a favourite destination during the rainy season. The undulating hilly terrain and lofty slopes make it an ideal spot for mountain climbing. Acknowledging the demand for the region’s real estate, Karjat was notified under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) a few years ago. The agency not only undertook advanced urban planning with a minimum Floor Space Index (FSI) of 1.0, but has also proposed a 20-20 league playground and a golf course in the area.... Since ND Studios’ establishment in 2005, the area has become a major attraction for filmmakers and big production studios.After the Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire was shot here, renowned Hollywood production companies such as Twentieth Century Fox, Walt Disney and DreamWorks (with Reliance Big Studio) are also in the process of setting up mega studios and production facilities in Karjat. Upcoming developments in MMR, primarily the Trans Harbor link between Sewri, Mumbai, and Navi Mumbai, are projected to reduce the distance between the cities and improve their connectivity to Karjat. Additionally, the conversion of Badlapur-Neral-Karjat road, from a two-lane to a four-lane highway, will boost the area’s connectivity to the commercial and industrial pockets of the MMR region. Due to the improved connectivity, the area is expected to become a sought-after destination among Non-Resident Indian (NRI) investors in the years to come.
